Whisky Review #1: Aberlour 12 year old - Non Chill-Filtered "Autumn Days"

Ich habe lange darüber nachgedacht, welche Whisky ich als erstes unter die Lupe nehmen sollte. Sollte es etwas besonderes sein? Immerhin ist das erste Review ein besonderer Anlass! Oder sollte ich lieber mit einem Standard anfangen? Das würde sich wohl eher eignen um euch da draußen zu interessieren.

Manchmal sollte man Sachen einfach nicht zu sehr überdenken! Heute war immerhin ein wunderschöner Herbsttag. Die Bäume lassen ihre Blätter fallen, die Sonne scheint noch und es ist noch nicht zu kalt. Ich habe also die Beine in die Hand genommen und bin nach draußen gegangen um diese Frage zu beantworten.

Die Antwort war schnell klar: Aberlour 12 jahre Non Chill-Filtered. Dieser Whisky passt perfekt zu meiner Stimmung und zum Wetter draußen. Dieser Aberlour ist Herbst. Kein "richtig kalter Wintertag", kein "schöner Sommertag". Nein, es ist ein Herbst-Whisky.

Die Details:

Aberlour wurde 1826 gegründet und gehört momentan den Chivas Brothers. Wahrscheinlich kennt ihr die Destille für ihre Sherry und Bourbonfass gelagerten, typischen Highland Whiskys und den berühmt-berüchtigten A'Bunadh. Das Sherrymonster schlechthin.

Insgesamt bietet Aberlour etwas für jeden Geldbeutel: Angefangen beim 10 Jährigen bis hin zu 18 Jährigen und sogar älteren Whiskys.

Dieser Whisky hier ist eher auf der jüngeren Seite des Spektrums: 12 Jahre alt. Aber dafür wurde er nicht mit Kältefiltration gequält und mit ordentlichen 48% Alkoholgehalt abgefüllt. Für mich ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung.

Nase: Der Sherry steht hier im Vordergrund. Dunkle Früchte, Feige, Pflaumen und etwas Erdbeere. Dazu kommen Orangen im Hintergrund. Die Alkoholstärke ist spürbar aber nicht zu stark. Passt wirklich gut zum Herbst!

Geschmack: Zugegeben, der Ersteindruck ist etwas schärfer als gedacht. Aber nach dem ersten Schwung Alkohol zeigen die Sherryfässer ihren Einfluss. Zunächst Erdbeere, dann eine Entwicklung hin zu Rosine und Toffee. Der Whisky startet eher süß und cremig und  wird dann trockener. Der Geschmack setzt die Nase fort.

Finish: Das Finish ist mittellang. Trockenheit bleibt, wie auch die Fruchtigkeit aus dem Geschmack. Was bleibt ist etwas Bitterkeit und Früchtekuchen.

Abschließende Gedanken: Dieser Whisky hat mir heute sehr gut gefallen. Eigentlich bietet er genau was er verspricht: Einen runden Sherrywhisky der sich gut an einem Herbsttag trinken lässt. Die höheren Prozente und der Verzicht auf Kühlfiltrierung passen gut in das Gesamtbild. Dazu kostet er nicht allzu viel!

I spend a lot of time thinking about which whisky I should review first. Should I go with something special? After all the first review IS a special occasion. Or should I go with something standard? Maybe this would be the better idea to get lots of people out there interested.

Sometimes its better not to overthink things. After all it's been a beautiful day in northern Germany today. The leafs are falling off the trees. The sun is still shining and it's not that cold. So after a nice long stroll outside the question which whisky should be the first was answered just by my mood.

Aberlour 12 year old Non Chill-Filtered was a pretty straight answer today. It just fits the weather and my mood perfectly. It's not a dram for these cold-to-the-bone winterdays but it isn't a summer dram either. This Aberlour is just liquid autumn to me.

Let's get into the details:

Aberlour distillery was founded in 1826. Right now it is owned by Chivas Brothers. Aberlour is a pretty standard highland distillery, maturing whisky mostly in a combination of Bourbon and Sherry Casks. Maybe the most famous release is the A'Bunadh: Aberlours sherry-monster cask strength non age statement release.

The distillery offers quite a range of whisky from the entry level 10 year old to the Aberlour 18 year old.

The Aberlour at hand sits in the middle of the range. It is on the young side of the spectrum with "only" 12 years of maturation. But, as it is pretty obvious from the name, it hasn't undergone the torture of chill filtration. Furthermore it is bottled at 48% ABV. Way to go Aberlour!

Nose: Pretty sherry-driven. There are some dark fruits. Figs, plums and a hint of strawberry. Some oranges linger in the background. The higher strength is noticeable but not too imposing. Like I said: perfect for a nice autumn day.

Taste: I have to admit: the first taste is a bit sharper than expected. But after the first punch of alcohol the sherry casks show their influence (the whisky is a mix of bourbon & sherry casks). First strawberry again, then a developement into raisins and toffee. Starting sweet and creamy but then the whisky turns a bit dry. Overall the taste matches the nose.

Finish: The finish is medium. Some of the dryness remains and so do some of the fruity notes. A slight taste of fruitcake remains.

Overall/Final thoughts: I really enjoyed this whisky today. It just feels right on a wonderful autumn day. It pretty much meets the expectation. Aberlour 12 year old Non Chill-Filtered shows some wonderful sherry casks flavors and the higher ABV and the lack of chill filtration overall add to the whole experience. Not too costly either.
