Whisky Review #11: Auchentoshan - Distillery Cask #205 Bordeaux "Merry Christmas!"

Eigentlich wollte ich dieses Review als Weihnachtsreview veröffentlichen. Fotos mit Geschenken, etwas über Besinnlichkeit und Familie. Aber manchmal kommen die Sachen etwas anders. Die Weihnachtstage waren einfach "zu sehr" im Zeichen der Liebsten und ich bin einfach nicht dazu gekommen das Review online zu stellen. Aber dann kommt es jetzt halt als Nachtrag und aus "Frohe Weihnachten" wird "Ich wünsche Frohe Weihnachten gehabt zu haben". So einfach ist das!


Ich bin eigentlich gar nicht so der Weihnachtstyp. Meistens empfinde ich es eher so, dass die Menschen um mich herum (oder vor allem auf der Straße) vor Weihnachten immer unglaublich gestresst sind. Warum sollte man sich so etwas freiwillig antun? Und wofür überhaupt? Muss man unbedingt DAS Geschenk zu Weihnachten finden, muss man enttäuscht sein, wenn man nicht DAS Geschenk geschenkt bekommt? Was soll dieser ganze unnötige Stress? ... Habe ich so nie verstanden.

Aber dennoch kann ich der ganzen Nummer etwas abgewinnen. Ich verschenke gerne Sachen und zeige damit, dass mir jemand wichtig ist. Und wer hat schon ernsthaft etwas gegen Geschenke, die man selbst bekommt? Viel wichtiger ist mir aber die freie Zeit, die endlich mal alle gemeinsam haben. Über das Jahr verteilt ist irgendwie jeder immer mit irgendetwas beschäftigt und man findet selten die Zeit Familie und Freunde in wirklich entspannter Atmosphäre zu treffen. Weihnachten ist dies - zumindest bei mir - meist möglich. In diesem Sinne: Macht euch nicht zu viel Stress, genießt ein paar ruhige Tage oder wenigstens Stunden und vor allem: Packt einen schönen Malt aus und schenkt euch einen großzügigen Schluck ein. Ihr habt es euch verdient!

Was packe ich dieses Jahr aus? Nun, die erste Überlegung war ein Glenfarclas Christmas Malt. Aber irgendwie war mir das dann doch etwas zu "langweilig". Ein Christmas Malt zu Weihnachten, ein Hoch auf die Kreativität! Dennoch sollte es etwas Besonderes sein und noch dazu ordentlich Kraft haben, immerhin ist offiziell Winter, auch wenn man davon in Kiel momentan nicht so viel spürt (+8°C und trübes Wetter). Für mich wird es daher ein Auchentoshan. Das dritte Review zu dieser Destille in nur 2 Monaten auf diesem Blog, ja ja, ich weiß! Aber ich spreche hier halt über die Whiskys, die mir gefallen und dieser hier gefällt mir sehr gut.

Ein relativ junger Malt, stimmt. Aber ich verspreche euch, dass er es in sich hat!

Kurz ein Wort zur Geschichte dieser Flasche: Ich selbst war im April 2015 bei Auchentoshan (hier geht's zum Artikel), war aber nur mit Handgepäck unterwegs und konnte daher leider keine Flasche mitnehmen, was mich wirklich geärgert hat! Glücklicherweise war meine Freundin im Sommer 2015 beruflich in Glasgow und konnte mir so doch noch eine kleine Flasche dieses flüssigen Goldes abzapfen. Manchmal hat man einfach Glück!

Nase: Zunächst erstaunlich zurückhaltend, dann kommen Gewürze: Zimt und Muskat. Relativ trocken, kaum Frucht. Aber keine dominanten Rotwein-Aromen, insgesamt schön eingebunden. Es ist aber Luft nach oben!

Geschmack: Auch hier zunächst angenehm mild, hätte ich so gar nicht erwartet. Aber dann geht es los: Gewürze drängen sich auf, der Whisky wird sehr trocken. Muskat und Zimt, etwas in Richtung trockener Glühwein. Der Alkohol legt sich auch auf die Zunge, insgesamt ein sehr schwerer Whisky. Vielschichtig, komplex aber auch etwas rau.

/mit Wasser: Jetzt geht es doch schon besser! Der Alkohol weicht komplett und gibt den nötigen Körper. Durch das Wasser (ca. 50% Alkohol) wird der Whisky deutlich voller und cremiger am Gaumen. Neben den Noten ohne Wasser kommt jetzt auch eine weiche, zarte Süße dazu. Genial!

Finish: Das Finish ist lang geht weiter in eine würzige Richtung. Zimt bleibt am Gaumen und ist dabei wieder ziemlich trocken. Hinzu kommen zart ein paar Frucht-Aromen in der Nähe von Pflaume, vielleicht auch etwas Muskatnuss.

/mit Wasser: Auch der Abgang wird mit Wasser nochmals besser. Diese fruchtig-süße aber keinesfalls klebrige Note aus dem Geschmack setzt sich auch im Abgang deutlicher fort.

Gesamteindruck: Wirklich, was ein genialer Tropfen! Auchentoshan und Weinfässer gefallen mir meistens gut und dieses Fass ist wirklich etwas besonderes. Vielleicht sollte dieser Whisky eigentlich in den Blood Oak und wurde aber als herausragend angesehen und deswegen als Distillery Cask ausgesucht? Man kann nur raten. Die finale Frage: Ist er sein Geld wert? Nun ja, man bekommt in dieser Preisklasse schon wirklich tolle Tropfen. Dieser Auchentoshan ist für mich aber etwas Besonderes und daher sicherlich seinen Preis wert. Vielschichtig, nicht zu "weinig" und für seine 9 Jahre erstaunlich reif.

This review was supposed to go online as some kind of "Christmas Review". But there simply wasn't enough time to finish and publish this one. So maybe the title should be "I hope you had a wonderful christmas", but anyway let's let the malt speak for itself!

I have to admit, that I'm not a christmas-guy. I simply cannot understand why people get stressed out about finding the PERFECT present. Why is it so important to find the perfect gift once a year? I don't get it and I don't want to get stressed out about it.

But, I still like christmas. Why? Well, because it is the only time in the year that everyone - at least in my family - is relaxed and has some time to meet and simply talk and have fun. I really enjoy this week from christmas to new years, because it is a good time to meet family and friends.

And it is the perfect time to open a nice bottle of whisky and simply enjoy a great dram. I thought a lot about what I should drink and review for christmas. The first thing to my mind was a Glenfarclas Christmas Malt, but that's not the most creative thing ever, right? But still, I wanted something special and something that has quite a bit of power. So this is what I came up with:

"Not a 30+ year old whisky for christmas? After all you are supposed to be a Whisky expert!" you might say now. Well, this one is simply a great dram that I enjoy. Deal with it! :)

This small 200ml bottle had quite a complicated way to Kiel. I visited Auchentoshan in April 2015 but couldn't take a bottle with me even though I tasted this straight from the cask and I tell you, I fell in love instantly. But due to flight restrictions and all this stuff I simply wasn't able to take a bottle with me. Fortunately my girlfriend visited Glasgow a couple of months later and visited Auchentoshan herself. When she got home I was presented this little bottle. Eternal love for sure!

Category: Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Distillery: Auchentoshan (Lowlands)

Preis: 51 - 100 € (75 Pounds, only available at the Distillery)

56.5% ABV

Nose: Suprisingly tame in the beginning. Then spices: cinnamon and nutmeg, quite dry with less fruity notes then I expected. There are some "wine-y" notes, but not too many. Pretty well rounded, but there not the highest scoring. Maybe 6/7

Taste: Again this whisky starts surprisingly mild, not what I expected. But after a couple of seconds this dram explodes: Spices and dryness. Nutmeg, cinnamon again, spiced wine (Is this the right word?). The alcohol starts to make an entrance on the tongue, a heavy whisky. There is a lot to discover but  I think some water is needed.

/with water: I brought the the strength down to about 50% ABV and this dram gets just great! There is still some alcohol noticeable, but now it  is well integrated. The whisky gets milder and more creamy on the tongue. Sweetness starts to develop, reminding me of  plums, maybe some berries. Just great!

Finish: A pretty long finish. Spices with most noticeably cinnamon and oaky notes remain. Dryness with fruity notes. Just think of stewed plums. What I like the most is that there is some developement going on: fruity notes are starting the finish but then they step aside and make room for the more dry and oaky counterparts. 

Final Thoughts: This is a wonderful cask, for sure. Maybe this was supposed to be blended into the Blood Oak release, I don't know for sure but it would fit the flavour. It is a little bit like a supercharged version. I have to admit, that it is expensive, but in my opinion it was worth my money.
