Quickly Reviewed #11: Arran 1996/2015 - McNeill's Choice

Über den Whisky: Dieser Arran ist mir letzte Woche bei einem Tasting über den Weg gelaufen. In letzter Zeit habe ich meinen Gefallen an dieser jungen (gegründet 1995) Inselbrennerei gefunden. Martim, dabei aber meist recht leicht und ausgewogen. In den nächsten Jahren kommt da bestimmt noch viel Gutes!

Dieser Whisky wurde für McNeill's Choice in Fassstärke und natürlich nicht kühl gefiltert abgefüllt. Gereift ist er in einem Sherry Butt und wurde nach 18 Jahren in die Flasche gelassen. Er trägt den Beinamen "Firth of Clyde", welches der Name für den Nordseeteil zwischen der Isle of Arran und dem schottischen  Festland ist.

Nase: Schön, intensiv und fruchtig. Brombeeren sind definitiv mit dabei, auch andere Waldfrüchte finden Anklänge. Dazu aber auch eine leichte Meeresbrise und etwas Strandluft. Kräftig und wundervoll.

Geschmack: 54% sind natürlich nicht wenig Alkohol, aber selbst dafür ist er erstaunlich bissig im Mund. Etwas Wasser tut diesem Tropfen doch gut. Dann kommen auch die Beeren zum Vorschein, Brombeere, Johannisbeere und insgesamt rote Früchte. Leicht vanillig und cremig. 

Finish: Für mich ist der Abgang typisch Arran. ... und das macht es auch etwas schwer zu beschreiben. Er ist kräftig und bringt eine gewisse Schärfe mit. Aber der Abgang sagt für mich einfach "Meer". Er ist frisch und klar, wie ein Kieselstrand mit kaltem Wasser. Keine muffigen Algenreste oder sowas, wirklich angenehm und wie gesagt "klar". Klingt seltsam, beschreibt es für mich aber gut.

Abschließende Gedanken: Ein schöner Tropfen mit tollen Fruchtaromen. Das Fass ist auch nach 18 Jahren nicht zu dominant daherkommt. Vielmehr zeigen sich im Geschmack und Abgang auch wirklich schön die Brennereinoten von Arran. Mir gefällt er ohne mich wirklich umzuhauen, und
mit knapp 100€ ist es auch wahrlich kein Schnäppchen!

About the whisky: Arran is a rather young distillery which I fell in love with during the last months. Even though they are producing malt whisky for only about 20 years now, these guys know what they do!

This Arran is bottled for McNeill's Choice at 54.1% ABV, natural colour and has aged for 18 years in a sherry butt.

Nose: A strong nose with lots of blackberries. Intense with all kind a berries. But there is some sea in there as well. Beach on a cold, clear day. 

Taste: 54% ABV isn't an easy drinking strength, for sure. But this is still pretty sharp. With water it opens up and becomes a way better dram. Blackberries again, some other sweet berries, just a mixed mag of all kinds of berries. Red fruits, some vanilla and a creamy mouthfeel.

Finish: This is an Arran finish from start to finish. And that is what makes is difficult to describe. There is a slight peppery, sharp touch. But first and foremost the finish tells one story: "sea". It is fresh and clear, just like a rocky beach on a cold day. Sounds strange? I guess so, but that's the best way to describe it.

Final Thoughts: I enjoy this Arran (as I did with almost all Arran that I have tried). After 18 years of cask influence there is still a distillery character present, and I think that is a nice balance between the sweet fruity-berry-notes and the clean coastal character. I like it, but it is not overwhelming and quite pricy!
