Quickly Reviewed #10: Laphroaig - Four Oak

Über den Whisky: Dieser Laphroaig ist Anfang 2017 neu erschienen. Exklusiv für den Travel Retail, daher auch das Übliche: nur 40%, gefärbt, gefiltert, kein Alter, dafür aber ein schicker Name. Hinter dem Four Oak verstecken sich folgende 4 Hölzer (Fassreifung):
Quarter Casks, Ex-Bourbon Fässer, europäische und amerikanische Eiche.

Na gut, ich bin gespannt!

Nase: Rauch, klar. Aber irgendwie auch würzig. Erinnert mich ein wenig an meine selbstgemachte BBQ-Sauce. Da ist zwar auch rauchiger Whisky drin, aber hier kommt auch edelsüße Paprika mit durch. Dazu noch etwas "staubig", erinnert mich an einen Ausflug in den Keller oder alten Dachboden. Insgesamt nicht überragend tief, aber auch nicht furchtbar. Eher ein leichter Islay bis hier.

Geschmack: Extrem leicht, dann vom Mundgefühl angenehm cremig, fast schon "dick". Allerdings auch gar nicht so besonders viel Geschmack. Etwas Eiche, etwas Rauch. Erstaunlich wenig Süße, keinerlei Früchte oder Ähnliches. Hm. Hat da jemand vergessen den Geschmack einzubauen?
Beim erneuten verkosten kommt etwas Banane dazu, ganz dezent, definitiv im Hintergrund. Überzeugt noch immer nicht.

Finish: Auch hier: überraschend kurz. Natürlich verbleibt der Rauch ein wenig, aber hier habe ich defintiv keine Rauchbombe im Glas. Ein ziemlich zahmer Laphi, der schon fast seifig wird nach einigen Minuten. Sehr seltsam. Nicht überzeugend. Punkt.


Abschließende Gedanken: Gut, ich bin nicht der größte Laphroaig Fan. Wenn ihr die Brennerei über alles liebt, dann könnt ihr vielleicht einen Punkt auf die Wertung drauflegen, oder vielleicht müsst ihr einen abziehen, weil ihr zusätzlich enttäuscht seid?! Wer weiß, aber ich weiß für mich: Dieser Whisky überzeugt mich nicht. Weder Fisch noch Fleisch hat er weder besonders ausgeprägte Islay Aromen, noch Qualitäten einer anderen Region.

About the whisky: This Laphroaig ist the newest expression for the Travel Retail. There are quite a lot Laphroaigs out there, that would fit this sentence: QA, PX and now the Four Oak (FO?). As you would expect from a travel retail expression, this one comes at 40% ABV, coloured and chill filtered. At least you get 1 liter for your money.

Before I forget, the "four oaks" are: quarter casks, ex-bourbon, european and american oak. Let's see...

Gladly, I only bought a sample of the
Four Oak

Nose: Smoke, sure. And spicy. Reminds me of my selfmade BBQ-sauce (there is a smoky whisky in it after all...). Bellpepper seasoning and a bit dry and dusty. Like a visit to an old cellar. Not overly complex but not bad. A lighter islay whisky.

Taste: Very light at first. Then the whisky gets creamy and thick. But that is only the mouthfeel. Tastewise? Nothing is happening. Some oakyness, some smoke. That's it. Hey Laphroaig! Did you forget to put taste in this one? After a second taste: some banana in the background.

Finish: Short story: short. Of course there is some dry smoke, but this isn't a strong Islay malt. It just is tame and restrained. It gets soapy after a while. Nothing more to tell here.

Final Thoughts: I am not a big fan of Laphroaig and the Four Oak won't change that. It is neither a big Islay malt nor does it have any other redeeming qualities. Just spend your money on something else.
