Whisky Review #21: Auchroisk 1999/2016 - The Whisky Chamber "Der unabhängige März Teil I"

Den Auftakt macht: The Whisky Chamber

Todays review is the start of a small series about independent bottlers. In every Sunday Review I will talk about a different bottler, so if you follow you will get to know four of them. I didn't choose them by any criteria to be honest, these aren't the biggest bottlers or just local ones. It is just a range of companies that I like. Nothing more, but nothing less either. I will start this series with a german bottler: The Whisky Chamber.

The Whisky Chamber

About the independent bottler: The Whisky Chamber was founded in 2006 by Thomas Ide. So as the day of writing this review, there is a over 10 year long history of bottling whisky to be found here. Maybe this isn't all that impressive compared to other big companies, but I think it is a sign of inherent quality. Thomas Ide has a simple rule: he only buys and sells malts that fit his personal taste. If you buy a malt bottled by The Whisky Chamber, you will have to hope to meet his personal preferences. But as I said, there is a 10 year history behind this and I think it is safe to say, that Thomas also meets his customers preferences.
Right now there are 10 bottlings available at the homepage, but as always with german bottlings: I don't know if you can ship them to your country!

About the whisky: Auchroisk is a rather young distillery. Production started in 1974 and was supposed to go completely into blending. But as it turned out, the quality was pretty good. So in 1978 Auchroisk released the first 3 year old Single Malt Whisky as the first distillery ever to release a malt at that age. Since 1975 Auchroisk is part of Diageo.

The reviewed Single Malt is bottled by The Whisky Chamber. It matured in a ex sherry refill hogshead for 15 years (03/12/1999 - 14/01/2016) and is bottled at cask strength and without any colouring of unnecessary filtration.

Nose: This is a full and quite intense nosing experience. Fruity and thick, a strong expression. The fruity notes are pineapple and peaches, with stewed fruits. But I also get some mint and bourbon notes, pretty strange in a refill sherry matured whisky. Sweetness and vanilla. This is great!

Taste: The start is quite tame, with sweetness, fruity notes and some sour notes as well. Quite the range and mix. But after a few seconds the alcohol kicks in. Oranges and pineapples with spices like ginger and a little pepper. Then oaky notes appear and add more depth. Are there almonds in the background? Hard to tell .. Some nutty notes are in there for sure. Again: great stuff!

Finish: Without water the finish starts a bit too strong for my taste. The alcohol is in the foreground and kills some of the taste. With water you get a nice mix of oak and ginger / peppery notes. The finish is medium long, not too short, but not too long either. Maybe the weakest part.

Final Thoughts: This is a wonderful whisky. Tasted blind, maybe I would say that this is bourbon cask matured. The sherry cask is quite subtle with only light notes of almonds and fruit in the background. But it still is a wonderful malt, even with the price taken into consideration.

Final Score: 7/7
