Quickly Reviewed #12: Mortlach 1996/2016 - Signatory Vintage

Über den Whisky: Dieser Mortlach wurde nach 20 Jahren Lagerung von einem der größten unabhängigen Abfüller der Welt abgefüllt: Signatory Vintage. Er wurde mit 46% und nicht kühl gefiltert abgefüllt - nicht besonders verwunderlich, da er Teil der "Un-Chillfiltered Collection" ist. Es handelt sich nicht um einen Single Cask Whisky, sondern um die Vermählung von 2 Bourbon Hogsheads (#195 und #196). Mortlach liegt mir eigentlich sehr,  ich bin gespannt auf diesen Whisky. Wo findet man sonst schließlich einen 20 Jahre alten Single Malt mit 46% für knapp über 50€?

Dieser Mortlach ist trotz 20 Jahre Alter
relativ hell.

Nase: Kräftig, der Alkohol drückt stark aus dem Glas. Der typische Mortlach-Charakter ist deutlich spürbar, irgendwie schwer, kräftig, fast schon "kau-bar"? Dazu kommen leichte Hustenbonbon-Noten. Außerdem, zunächst etwas versteckt, tropische Fruchtnoten: Ananas, Papaya, Mango. Die fruchtigen Noten kommen nach einiger Zeit mehr in der Vordergrund, aber leider bleiben sie insgesamt etwas zaghaft.

Geschmack: Schön mild, angenehm zunächst. Vanillige Süße spielt mit dem cremigen Mundgefühl. Allerdings kommt dann ziemlich schnell auch das Fass und der Alkohol durch. Etwas prickelnd, dann trocken, eichig-holzig und ziemlich kräftig. Die fruchtigen Noten aus der Nase sind zwar entfernt noch da, aber ein Fruchtfeuerwerk wird hier nicht gezündet.

Finish: Scharf, bitter. Ziemlich ungestühm. Pfreffrig. Dazu aber auch eine leichte, recht angenehme Säure. Insgesamt aber auch nicht übermäßig lang anhaltend.

Abschließende Gedanken: Ich habe hier schon häufiger kundgetan, dass ich Mortlach extrem gerne trinke. Der rustikale, kräftige Brennereicharakter gefällt mir meist sehr gut, es ist kein Vertreter der milden Speyside. Vor allem die Verbindung mit guten Bourbonfässern funktioniert meist ausgezeichnet. Hier bin ich etwas hin- und hergerissen, der Brennereicharakter und das "Funktionieren" findet in der Nase wirklich gut statt. Allerdings fällt das Erlebnis danach doch stark ab. Ich würde mal tippen, dass die Fässer 195 und 196 schon etwas länger im Einsatz sind und hier eher holzige, alte Fassnoten abgeben. Schade, die etwas jüngeren Ausführungen (sprich: Vorgänger dieser Abfüllung) haben mir extrem gut gefallen.

About the whisky: This Mortlach is 20 years old, un-chillfiltered and bottled at 46%. It almost is a single cask release, but there are two casks in the game here (#195 / #196). The casks are Bourbon Hogsheads, so expect some vanilla and light fruit. For me, this almost sounds like a dream, because the pricetag only reads ~55€ here in Germany!

Nose: Strong start with quite a lot of alcohol. But it settles down after a while. There is a lot of "Mortlach" going on here - strong, robust spirit, heavy and almost chewy (even on the nose). Some herbal cough sweets notes and - hidden in the background - tropical notes: pineapples, papaya and mango.

Taste: Surprisingly mild arrival. Vanilla sweetness plays with the creamy mouthfeel. Some restraint fruity notes, but they remain in the background. Then the alcohol and cask start to kick in. Sparkling, alcoholic and oak.

Finish: Sharp and bitter. Pretty rough. Peppry and a nice pleasant almost citrusy sour note. Only medium long with lots of oak remaining.

Final Thoughts: It is not a secret, that I really enjoy Mortlach. In fact, it might be one of my favourite distilleries overall (we are talking independent bottlings here!). I like the strong and robust character of the spirit that works really well with good bourbon casks. This expression isn't one of my favourites, sadly. I think casks #195 and #196 may have been re-fill (re-re-fill?) casks of a lackluster quality. There is way too much oak, not enough tropical fruit. But after all it is not that bad considering what you get for the price. A decent Mortlach, but I liked the younger versions better.
