Whisky Review #2: Unknown Distillery (Islay) - Comhlan 1.3 "Trick or Treat?"

I have to admit that I am not a Halloween fan. I pretty much just don’t care about it. Maybe it is a big thing in the US but I simply cannot understand why I should celebrate this commercially overhyped thing. Anyways, I don’t want to complain about the mechanisms of a globally connected economy and culture. After all I’m here to discuss whisky!

So I found myself with the good old question “what is the next whisky you are going to review?” This one fits well. Why? Just keep on reading!

“Comhlan 1.3”. Never heard of it? Well, that’s not your fault. I guess there are only a couple of chosen ones out there who did. 344 of them got a bottle. What is this all about…? This Whisky is bottled by the “Brühler Whiskyhaus” (http://www.whiskyhaus.de/) for a group of whisky maniacs. Part of the price (and there was an option to pay more if one wanted) was donated to charity. The distillery is unknown (or at least not mentioned on the label) but it is stated that it’s an Islay Single Malt and comes with a hefty 56.6% ABV. Furthermore it is unchill-filtered and natural color. Sounds good? Yes!

Let’s get to the fun part:

Nose: This one fits well with Halloween. Really smoky in the beginning. Think of beacon and a fireside, maybe tar. The alcohol is noticeable but not distracting in any way. After some time the smoke starts to settle down a little bit and fruitier notes come to mind. Definitely sherry influence here. Plums and Fruitcake.

/with water: Still smoky but the fruiter notes lose their influence. More alcohol. meh

Taste: Full bodied and creamy. Starts with only a light smokiness. Quite sweet, after a while the smoke fights its way into foreground (think: more Lagavulin then Laphroaig). A little bit of alcohol is noticeable as well. 


/with water: Softens up quite a bit. Still remains quite creamy and full bodied but a sour note comes into play. The smoky part moves more towards the finish. While the nose loses quite a bit by adding water, the taste changes. Not sure if for the better or worse.

Finish: Long, smoky and warming. A slight bitterness remains with the smoke. 

Overall/Final Thoughts: This whisky is young Islay at its best. It is fierce, smoky and can't deny its sherry cask origin. Maybe it is not the most complex whisky but everyone who enjoys Islay Malts will like this one!

Unbekannte Destille (Islay) Comhlan 1.3 56,6% Alkohol – “Süßes oder Saures!”

Ich muss zugeben, dass ich kein besonders großer Halloween Freund bin. Irgendwie interessiert es mich nicht so wirklich. Vielleicht mag es ein großes Thema in den USA sein, aber so richtig will ich nicht verstehen, warum es das dann auch bei uns sein muss. Irgendwie ist es mir doch zu kommerzialisiert und „overhyped“. Wie dem auch sei, ich bin ja nicht hier um mich über die großen Mechanismen einer globalisierten Welt auszulassen. Ich bin hier um Whisky zu probieren!

Die übliche Frage „Welchen Whisky willst du als nächstes verkosten?“ stellt sich also wieder. Dieser hier passt einfach perfekt. Warum? Später mehr dazu!

„Comhlan 1.3“. Noch nie davon gehört? Kein Problem, es geht wohl vielen so. Immerhin gibt es nur 344 Flaschen auf dem Markt, also kann das Publikum gar nicht so groß sein. Worum geht es also? Der Whisky wurde für eine Gruppe von Whiskyfreunden vom „Brühler Whiskyhaus“ (http://www.whiskyhaus.de/) abgefüllt. Ein Teil der Einnahmen (und wenn man wollte noch etwas obendrauf) wurden gespendet, also eine tolle Aktion! Die Destille ist unbekannt (zumindest steht nichts auf dem  Label) aber immerhin bekommen wir den Hinweis, dass es sich um einen Islay Single Malt handelt. Außerdem steigen 56,6% Alkohol, fehlende Kühlfiltration und eine natürliche Farbe mit in den Ring. Klingt doch großartig!

Jetzt zum spaßigen Teil:

Nase: Der hier passt gut zu Halloween. Ein kleines Monster aus der Flasche. Anfangs sehr rauchig. Speck / Schinken und Lagerfeuer. Der Alkohol ist spürbar (klar bei 56,6%) aber ablenkend. Nach einiger Zeit tritt der Rauch zur Seite und fruchtigere Noten treten in den Vordergrund. Pflaume und Früchtekuchen sind zu vernehmen. Sherryfass, so viel ist sicher.

/mit Wasser: Der Rauch bleibt, die Frucht geht. Alkoholischer. Naja ...

Geschmack: Schöne Cremigkeit und toller Körper. Anfags nur wenig Rauch. Ziemlich süß, nach einer Weile kämpft sich der Rauch nach vorn (eher Lagavulin als Laphroaig). Der Alkohol bleibt spürbar.

/mit Wasser: Wird deutlich weicher, ohne dabei die Cremigkeit oder den Körper zu verlieren. Während der Rauch etwas mehr Richtung Finish rückt, kommt eine leichte Säure ins Spiel. Obwohl die Nase durch die Zugabe von Wasser verliert scheint der Geschmack weniger negativ zu reagieren. Ob es nun besser oder schlechter wird? Da bin ich mir nicht sicher.

Finish: Lang, rauchig und wärmend. Eine leichte Bitterkeit bleibt zusammen mit dem Rauch.

Abschließende Gedanken: Wirklich ein Paradebeispiel für jungen Islay Whisky. Kräftig, rauchig und schöne Noten aus dem Sherryfass. Vielleicht nicht der komplexeste Whisky, aber ein Tipp für jeden Islay-Fan!
